I found the problem i was also using the enforcer-plugin in a parent pom.xml. It was configured with goal 'enforce-once ' which prevented a correct release prepare. I 've got things working now.
Is it possible in maven to alias a certain phase or goal? For example I
have a goal called sayhi hello and all I want a user to enter is mvn
sayHello to get it to run. Is that possible?
